about gofoil & alex aguera

Alex Aguera has spent the better part of his life on the water or in the workshop chasing that extra tenth of a knot. Born and raised in Florida and drawn to Maui’s waves, Alex’s journey spans windsurfing championships, board shaping, and ultimately a breakthrough in foil technology.

In 2016, on Maui’s Kanaha Beach, Alex made a pivotal leap — developing a foil board that was not reliant on external power sources, but instead harnessed the rider’s paddle stroke and the ocean’s natural energy. That innovation helped spark the modern foiling movement.

As founder of GoFoil, Alex has led a relentless pursuit of performance, precision, and durability. His background in shaping shortboards and his deep technical understanding of foils allowed him to rethink what it meant to fly above the water. Today the brand designs high-modulus carbon foils, coupled with boards and gear, all developed in Maui and produced with exacting standards.

Beyond the gear, his vision is simple: to open up the limitless thrill of foiling to riders of all backgrounds, whether they’re chasing downwind glides, ocean swells, or flat-water speed runs. With Alex at the helm, GoFoil remains committed to innovation, quality and the pure joy of being in motion.

Modern foiling began in 2016, when Alex Aguera built the first GoFoil prototypes and Kai Lenny tested them downwind on Maui’s north shore. Powered by the island’s steady trade winds and open-ocean swells, Kai used the foil to link waves for miles — gliding effortlessly above the surface. It was the first time anyone had harnessed the combined lift of a hydrofoil and the ocean’s energy to ride continuously downwind. That moment sparked a global movement and marked the true beginning of modern foiling.
